Masi Asare is a composer/lyricist, playwright, singer, voice teacher, and performance theorist in New York City. She wrote the score for the  secret agent musical Sympathy Jones, and is completing her PhD in Performance Studies at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Masi was honored with the inaugural Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for a woman composer of musical theatre, given by the Ziegfeld Club with mentorship from two Tony Award winning theatre women...composer Jeanine Tesori and producer Daryl Roth. Current projects include writing book, music, and lyrics for The Family Resemblance, a new, semi-autobiographical musical about a mixed race family and an African ancestor, commissioned by Theatre Royal Stratford East (London); writing book, music, and lyrics for an original musical about a story of racial passing, commissioned by Barbara Whitman Productions and Grove Entertainment; and writing lyrics for the Broadway bound new musical adaptation of director Mira Nair's film Monsoon Wedding. Masi recently completed her PhD in Performance Studies at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, with a dissertation entitled Voicing the Possible: Technique, Vocal Sound, and Black Women on the Musical Stage. In the fall of 2018 she will join the faculty of the Northwestern University Theatre Department as Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre.
